Conquer Public Speaking Fear Using the Self Therapy Technique

The following is an excerpt from the Self Therapy for Anxiety audio program:

There was a time when I was quite literally petrified of speaking in front of groups. I say "petrified" because when I would talk in front of people, the fear would be so bad that a lump in my throat would phyisically prevent me from speaking. I would blush like a tomato and mentally freeze so that I couldn't even think of what I had to say. This reaction alone of course made the whole experience a hundred times worse. It's said that for some people the fear of public speaking is stronger than the fear of death. And at times like that, I would definitely agree. After learning Self Therapy, I started to apply the technique to my fear of public speaking. I began preparing for such situations well in advance by performing the [explained in program] variation of Self Therapy, imagining myself in the future situation and doing Self Therapy with the energies that arose.

As the time to speak approached, even minutes before the event, I would continue listening to my energies as I got ready. Finally, even while speaking, I would have my mental awareness on the energies welling up inside me. Whereas previously I would have tried to suppress those energies while speaking, which usually resulted in total disaster, I could now let all those reactions flow into and through me, like a river, without fear. What would have previously become bottled up energy overload was now a completely manageable reaction. Ironically, as I became more confident in my ability to handle any reaction, the fear that was causing the reaction in the first place disappeared. I now have very little fear of speaking in front of groups, and the fear that I do get is beneficial for transforming into constructive energy, or for just keeping me on my toes.

You may wonder, "Isn't it difficult to concentrate awareness inwardly when involved in an activity like speaking?" While this type of multitasking is not as focused as performing Self Therapy alone, you will find that after practicing the Self Therapy technique for awhile in this manner, maintaining an inner awareness while outwardly interacting is very possible, and extremely rewarding.

The example of public speaking that I just covered illustrates an application of Self Therapy to a future event. Once you become more accustomed to these techniques, you may want to apply them to situations as they occur, or soon after they occur.

"I got the audio just in time to prepare for my 'anxiety-producing-situation' (a performance of really difficult classical music) which I'm happy to report I aced... I truly owe it to the excellence of the selftherapy audio program, which is intelligent, easy to follow, not marred by sappy New Age music... and allowed me to pretty much instantly "get" how to put the principles to work. Thank you for an EXCELLENT product!"

"I have tried the exercises from the audio program and I have found them very helpful. I downloaded the program because I was a bit anxious about an upcoming presentation that I have to give in school. This program is teaching me how to adequately deal with anxiety instead of being in denial or suppressing it. This unique approach is just what I needed. I have a better outlook and I feel that I will be fine. Thank you and the entire staff at selftherapy.org"

"I gained confidence in public speaking, I just observed myself that whenever I give presentation even by just reading publicly I felt the rush, fear, tachycardia and shaking of my voice and now I applied your Self Therapy of acknowledging the energy within. My symptoms subside slowly."

"I've listened to the downloads, and surprisingly I've found them quite useful. For me personally public speaking tends to raise my anxiety levels but I'm finding that i have a tool now to try and deal with the feeling."
